혜능 (慧能)을 개조 (開祖)로 하는 남종 (南宗)과, 신수 (神秀)를 종조 (宗祖)로 하는 북종 (北宗)을 말함. 남종이 교외별전 (敎外別傳) 불립문자 (不立文字) 이심전심 (以心傳心)의 법 (法)을 세워 선정 (禪定)만을 닦는 돈오 (頓悟)를 주장하고, 북종 (北宗)은 점차로 수행하면 누구나 도 (道)를 증득 (證得)할 수 있다는 점수 (漸修)를 내세움

The southern and northern schools: The southern school, founded by Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch, emphasized sudden enlightenment by means of transmission of the Buddha-dharma from mind-to-mind apart from doctrine, not depending on words and letters, and the mind-to-mind transmission of Dharma, while the Northern School, established by Master Shenxiu, emphasized realization of the Way by gradual cultivation.
