자기 밖의 부처를 찾으면 영영 자신을 잃어버리고 깨치지 못한다는 뜻. 부처님 당시 사람들이 부처님을 보려고 밀려들었다. 그러나 한 노파만은 부처님을 보지 않으려고 문을 닫고 두 손으로 눈을 가렸다. 그러자 열 손가락 끝에 부처님이 나타났다고 한다

An old lady's refusal to see the Buddha: It means not to find the Buddha outside of oneself. There is an interesting story. At the time of Sakyamuni Buddha, a great number of people gathered to behold the Buddha, but there was an old lady who locked herself in the house refusing to see the Buddha by covering her eyes with her hands, and lo! Suddenly Buddha appeared at the end of her ten fingers.
