사람마다 본래 불성을 지니고 있는데, 그것을 모르고 참 부처를 등지고 거짓 부처를 찾는 것을 경계한 단하 천연 (丹霞 天然) 선사(739-824)의 일화. 단하 선사가 어느 추운 겨울날 법당에서 자다가 추워서 목불 (木佛)을 가져다 불을 피웠다. 원주 (院主)가 이를 보고 꾸짖자, 선사 대답하기를 ‘목불 속에 사리가 있는가 보려 했다’고 말했다고 한다

Lit. "Seon Master Danha burns the wooden Buddha statue," a warning not to find the Buddha outside of himself. There is an interesting episode. When Seon Master Dan Xia was sleeping in the Dharma Hall in the cold winter night, he burned a wooden Buddha statue to warm himself. When the superintendent of the temple asked the reason, the Master's reply was, "I just wanted to see whether there is a sarira or the relics of the Buddha in the Buddha statue."
