달마대사가 인도에서 온 뜻이 무엇이냐는 유명한 화두 (話頭)의 하나로, 그 참 뜻은 불교의 근본이 무엇이냐는 것으로 이해되고 있다. 이에 대한 조주스님의 대답은 뜻밖에도 ‘뜰 앞의 잣나무’였다
