무명
Mumyeong]
-
Avidya: Darkness, or ignorance: It actually refers to “not knowing" in Pali, in particular, not knowing the Four Noble Truths. The illusion without enlightenment, and the false view of self and things. In the Buddhist view, it is the inability to see the true nature of things, i.e., the impermanence of things and the law of causality, not the lack of knowledge or learning. Hence, it is also called bulgak, unenlightened. Ignorance is also another name for dualism: you and I, and this and that, which is the cause of all afflictions.
However, there is no such thing as ignorance. In other words, ignorance has no substance or its own self-nature. It is just a name and illusion. It is yet the fundamental obstacle in attaining enlightenment. Solution? Light your own candle in your heart and the Dharma. Yet the problem is that people are generally ignorant of impermanence and causality, and therefore become the victims of a selfish craving grounded in a mistaken belief in their own permanence and a misguided notion of happiness in which well-being is wrongly identified with the possessive acquisition of transitory objects of desire.
