꽉 맺혔다 하여 108결 (結)이라고도 말함. 중생의 번뇌 수효가 108이라는 말. 이것을 좀 더 자세히 설명하면, 육근 (六根)이 육경 (六境) 또는 육진( 六塵)을 만날 때마다 호 (好), 악 (惡), 평등 (平等)의 세 가지가 서로 같지 않아 18번뇌를 일으키고, 또 고 (苦), 락 (樂), 사 (捨) (버림)의 3수 (受) (느낌)가 있어 18번뇌를 내니, 모두 합하여 36 종이 되며, 또 이를 다시 삼세 (三世) (과거, 현재, 미래)에 배 (配)하면 108번뇌가 된다. 그러나 다른 계산 방법도 있다

108 passions or defilements: It is also called 108 knots. The 108 passions, afflictions, or defilements that disturb or pollute the mind and body of sentient beings.
The number 108 derives from the multiplication of the six sense- faculties or roots (eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind) by three discriminations (likes, dislikes, and equanimity)=(18); then the six roots are multiplied again by three emotions (suffering, pleasure, and renunciation)=(36), and then it is multiplied again by three (past, present, and future), which equals 108. There are, however, other methods of reckoning.
