선종에서 말하는 활구 (活句)와 사구 (死句). 알음알이가 붙은 말로, 말 가운데 말이 있는 것은 사구 (死句)이며, 말 가운데 말이 없는 것은 활구 (活句). 다시 말해 풀 수 있는 자물쇠는 사구이고, 풀 수 없는 자물쇠는 활구. 이를 좀 더 쉽게 이야기 하면, 진리를 깨치기 위한 하나의 방편인 언어문자에 매달리면 그것 이 곧 사구 (死句)이고, 하나의 방편인 언어문자를 통해 언어문자로 표현할 수 없는 진리를 깨닫게 되면 그것이 곧 (活句). 활구 참조

A dead phrase: In hwadu meditation, the phrase that has meaning or is explicable is called a "dead phrase," and the phrase that has no meaning or is inexplicable is called a "live phrase." We can also say that a lock that can be unlocked is a dead lock or phrase, and a lock that cannot be unlocked is a live lock or phrase. In other words, a phrase is just an expediency to realize the truth not truth itself, and if you could realize the inconceivable transcendental truth through an artful liberative technique of phrase, that is a live phrase.
