사무량 (四無量), 사등심 (四等心)이라고도 말함. 모든 존재를 차별 없이 사랑하며, 중생을 한 없이 어여삐 여기는 네 가지 한량없는 마음. 보살은 자신의 안위만을 위하여 윤회를 벗어나지 않으며, 소승 (小乘)과 같은 열반에 안주하지도 않으니, 이것이 바로 보살의 무한한 사랑과 자비이다)
1) 자심 (慈心) (모든 중생에게 따뜻한 마음씨와 즐거움을 주는 마음)
2) 비심 (悲心) (모든 중생들의 고통과 슬픔을 자신의 고통과 슬픔으로 여기는 마음)
3) 희심 (喜心) (다른 사람들의 기쁨을 자신의 기쁨으로 여기는 마음)
4) 사심 (捨心) (다른 사람들에 대해 사랑하거나 미워하는 마음이 없는 평등 (平等)한 빈 마음)

The four immeasurable minds: Full of love and without discrimination towards any living being, which the seekers of Enlightenment should cherish. The Bodhisattva does not put an end to samsara for his own sake, nor does he seek an ultimate repose in the Hinayaya Nirvana. This is the unbound selfless love of Bodhisattva, wishing all living beings to be free of suffering and to be happy.
1) Maitri: The immeasurable loving-kindness, benevolence, and sympathy toward all beings.
2) Karuna: The immeasurable compassion and ardent wish to relieve and transform the sufferings of others'.
3) Mudita: The immeasurable sympathetic and appreciative joy and rejoicing at the success and happiness of others.
4) Upeksha: The immeasurable renunciation, equanimity and even- mindedness. It is the state of mind that regards others with impartiality, free from attachment and aversion.
