사무외 (四無畏)라고도 말함. 두 가지가 있으니, 부처님과 보살에게 없는 네 가지 두려움을 말함
부처님의 사무소외 (四無所畏):
1) 정등각무외 (正等覺無畏) (일체법 (一切法)을 평등하게 깨달아 다른 이의 힐난 (詰難)을 두려워하지 않음)
2) 누영진무외 (漏永盡無畏) (온갖 번뇌를 다 끊어 외난 (外難)을 두려워하지 않음)
3) 설장법무외 (說障法無畏) (지혜를 장애하는 것을 말하되, 다른 이의 비난을 두려워하지 않음)
4) 설출도무외 (說出道無畏) (고통의 세계를 벗어나는 길을 가르치되 다른 이의 비난을 두려워하지 않음)
보살 (菩薩)의 사무소외 (四無所畏):
1) 능지무외 (能持無畏) (부처님의 가르침을 잘 기억하여 잊지 않고 그 뜻을 설함에 있어 두려움이 없음)
2) 지근무외 (知根無畏) (중생의 근기를 알고, 그에게 적절히 설법함에 있어 두려움이 없음)
3) 결의무외 (決疑無畏) (중생의 의문을 해결하는데 두려움이 없음)
4) 답보무외 (答報無畏) (모든 물음에 자유자재로 대답할 수 있어 두려움이 없음)

The four fearlessnesses: There are two groups, Buddha's and Bodhisattva's.
The Buddha's four fearlessnesses:
1) Fearlessness of any censure, since the Lord Buddha has already attained the wisdom of equanimity of all beings.
2) Fearlessness of any misfortune, since the Lord Buddha has already cut off all passions.
3) Fearlessness of any criticism for his discourse on the obstruction of wisdom.
4) Fearlessness of any criticism for his teaching how to be free from the world of suffering.
The Bodhisattva's four fearlessnesses:
1) Fearlessness of teaching the true intent of Buddha's teaching.
2) Fearlessness of teaching to a sentient being according to his/her capability.
3) Fearlessness of solving all the doubts of sentient beings.
4) Fearlessness of answering any questions from sentient beings.
