머리로 짜내는 지식. 머리 굴리는 것이 수행의 가장 큰 장애물. ‘사변적 (思辨的) 학문을 하는 사람은 날로 망상의 군더더기가 더하고, 무위 (無爲)의 도 (道)를 닦는 사람은 매일같이 망상이 줄어든다.’ (老子 道德經) 백경( 白鯨)의 저자로, 미국의 저명한 소설가 Herman Melville (1819-1891)은 알음알이에 대해, "To the dogs with the head! 지식? 개나 물어가라!"라고 그의 작품에서 말한 일이 있다)

Deliberation, conceptualization, ideation, intellectual speculation, or a conceptual mind and thought: The intellection, the biggest hindrance in attaining enlightenment. "In pursuing speculative knowledge, one only accumulates delusion daily. In practicing Tao, delusion decreases daily." It is a quote from Tao Te Ching, Ch. 48. Herman Melville (1819-1891) also denounces the intellection as saying, "To the dogs with the head!" in one of his short stories.
