적문 (迹門)이란, 진실을 위해 방편 (方便)을 베풀고(위실시권 (爲實施權)); 방편을 열어 진실을 내타내고(개권현실 (開權顯實)); 방편을 닫고 진실을 세움(폐권입실 (廢權立實))을 말함. 또 본문 (本門)이란, 본 (本)으로부터 적 (迹)을 드리우고(종본수적 (從本垂迹)); 적 (迹)을 열어 본 (本)을 드러내고(개적견본 (開迹顯本)); 적 (迹)을 닫고 본 (本)을 세움(폐적입본 (廢迹立本))을 말함

Three metaphors of essence or truth and its expedient method: The expedient teaching is to set up an expedient method for finding the essence or truth; open the method to reveal the essence or truth; remove the method to establish the essence or truth. The true or authentic teaching is to cover the truth with an expedient method; then use the expediency to reveal the essence or truth; remove the expediency, leaving nothing but the truth.
