만유 (萬有)의 실상 (實相)은 유 (有)도 아니고 무 (無)도 아닌 비유비공 (非有非空)의 중도 (中道)임을 말한 것. 다시 말해 현상세계란 궁극적인 의미에선 하나의 가상( 假相)으로 실재 존재 하는 것은 아니지만, 그렇다고 존재하지 않는 것도 아니라는 것. 마치 파도는 인정하되 그 실체는 안정하지 않는 것과 같은 논리. 따라서 대승불교에서 말하는 중도란 실재 현상은 인정하되 그 절대적 실체는 인정하지 않는 것을 말함. 그러나 종파에 따라 구체적인 해석에 있어선 다소의 차이가 있다

The true nature of the Middle Way or Path: The Mahayana holds a middle position regarding the nature of the phenomenal world. It is neither real nor unreal.
