한문으로는 두 가지 뜻이 있다. 하나는 상제 (上帝), 곧 천신 (天神). 다른 하나는 인간세계보다 수승한 과보를 받는 좋은 곳. 곧 욕계천 (欲界天), 색계천 (色界天), 무색계천 (無色界天)의 천상세계. 이는 또 천도 (天道)를 뜻하기도 함
