천태법화종 (天台法華宗)이라고도 말함. 중국 수 (隋)나라 때의 지의 (智顗) (538-597)를 개조 (開祖)로 하는 대승불교의 한 파. 법화경 (法華經)을 근본 경전 (經典)으로 하며, 선 (禪)을 지관 (止觀)이라는 이름으로 표방하는 동시에 간화선 보다 선정 (禪定)과 지혜의 조화를 종지 (宗 旨)로 함. 지관 (止觀) 그리고 묵조선 (黙照禪) 참조

The Tientai Sect, or the Celestial Platform Sect: One of the ten great sects in Chinese Buddhism. It was promoted greatly by its founder Zhiyi (538-597) during the Sui Dynasty. Its chief text is the Dharma Flower Sutra, or the Lotus Sutra, and its tenet is silent meditative contemplation with the emphasis on harmony and the attainment of samatha, or a single-pointed meditation and wisdom, different from patriarchal meditation, or word-contemplation medita- tion.
