아미타 부처님이나 관세음보살에 의탁하듯, 다른 불보살 (佛菩薩)의 자비에 의해 구제되기를 바라는 것. 다시 말해 화두선 (話頭禪)을 자력신앙 (自力信仰)이라 말하고, 염불선 (念佛禪)을 타력신앙 (他力信仰)이라고 말하나 그것은 단순 논리이다. 염불선 (念佛禪)에도 여러 가지가 있음을 알아야 하며, 수행의 궁극적인 목적이 강을 건너는 것이라면, 헤엄을 쳐서 건너가든 뗏목을 타고 건너가던 그것은 그리 중요하지 않다고도 말한다. 다시 말해 화두선 만을 고집하는 것도 하나의 법집 (法執) 이라는 것

Other-power: Emancipation by faith in other's power such as relying on Amitabha in the Pure Land of Bliss. Some people think that hwadu meditation is self-power and that chanting the name of the Buddh is other-power. But we must know that there are a few different modes of Buddha chanting, and it is not fair to label them all as the practice of other-power. We must also know that there are many ways to reach the other shore of enlightenment according to the capability of the individual.
