화두참구
[話頭參究, Hwadu Chamgu]
-
Investigation of hwadu, keyword, or key-phrase: What exactly is the hwadu investigation? It is an investigation of "a live phrase or word" (an alternate name for hwadu), which is beyond conception or investigation just like great empty space, or a kind of investigation of a password that has no key. What it means is that when you are holding a hwadu in meditation practice with a great doubt about the hwadu you are holding, you should never try to solve it by reasoning, because it has no answer just like infinite space or a password that has no key.
When we reflect or concentrate on a certain thing, our minds open gradually in an ever widening sphere. "If we adhere rigorously to this process, we soon find ourselves lost in the stars, as it were, with less and less security about ever having started from anywhere." In this process the hwadu you are holding will melt like a mound of butter in a hot broth.
Nevertheless, you should not cling to anything, which is the greatest taboo in meditation practice. Just drop your intellection and concentrate your mind in that empty spot to be with your original face, pure self-nature, the Buddha-nature of thusness, or the true reality of the universe that has neither name nor form. This is what we call mindfulness, "losing oneself," falling into a kind of oblivion, trance, or experiencing the state of which is like a daybreak, calm and bright, which is the way to be with your original face or the primordial universe itself, which is commonly called great emancipation, enlightenment and Nirvana. Cf. (Hwalgu) A live phrase or word, and (Ilguja) A phrase.
