인도의 대표적 종교. 일종의 해탈을 목적으로 하는 힌두교는 베다, 우파니샤드 그리고 바가 바기타 등에서 발전한 것으로, 초기 아리안 정착민들의 신앙에 그 바탕을 두고 있다. 중요한 교리로는 범아일여 (梵我一如)와 윤회사상 그리고 카스트 제도를 들 수 있다. 불교와 자이나교는 힌두교 의 전통에서 벗어나지만, 힌두교와 무관하지 않은 것으로 보고 있다

Hinduism: A philosophy of liberation from the material world and a common religion of India based upon the religion of the original Aryan settlers as expounded and evolved in the Vedas, the Upanishads, and the Bhagavad-Gita. Its characteristics are: Brahman is a creator-God who is also the universe itself, karma, and the caste system. Buddhism and Jainism are outside the Hindu tradition but are regarded as related religions.
