Mukjoseon]
-
Silent illumination meditation: Silent meditation without any thinking, different from hwadu meditation, is a different branch of Seon than Ganhwa Seon or word-contemplation meditation. As we are all inborn Buddhas and already possess Buddha-nature, all we have to do is, it claims, to sit tight and stay aware or contemplate in silence. In this sense, it is similar to Patriarchal meditation.
Silent meditative sitting itself is the form of awakening in this school. No hwadu or any device is required. Some claim that it is easier than Ganhwa Seon, even easier than Vipassana, but word-contemplation meditation discredit silent illumination meditation as "blind meditation," or "the dead-wood-ash meditation," which was the cause of the heated arguments between the two meditation practices. However, in the spirit of harmonization of views, we can understand both traditions as valid paths in their own right.
Silent illumination meditation is also called Caodong meditation, the same name of a Chinese Buddhist School, and still prevails in China and Japan, but not in Korea. Everyone needs a different kind of practice according to their temperament, which is perhaps why there are so many different koans. If someone feels that Ganhwa Seon or hwadu meditation is too difficult or not right for them, they may try silent illumination meditation and vice versa.
