공안
[公案, Gongan]
-
Gongan, or koan (J): Technical term of Seon Buddhism. An exercise for breaking the limitation of intellection and developing the intuition. It literally means "a public document" or "authoritative statue." It is also called gochik, an old rule or case.
There are said to be 1700 of them. Seon masters often use strange tools of instruction, "providing apparently irrelevant and even harsh answers to the questions or inquiries, and proposing some unanswerable questions of their own," which cannot be solved by the intellect. The whole intent is neither a riddle nor a witty remark, nor to confuse the student. It is rather to arouse doubt and push it to its furthest limits to renounce rational methods for the student to achieve enlightenment.
Their characteristics, unlike hwadu or key phrase meditation, require a dialogue between the master and student, but it is neither an intellectual nor an explanatory nor an instructive dialogue. If gong-an is the context of the dialogue, hwadu is a key word or a phrase of the dialogue. For further detailed information, see (Hwadu) Whadu, or key word or phrase and (Hwaduchamgu) Investigation of hwadu, or key word or phrase.
